About

Hello, I’m Sarah.

My friends call me Bishop, more commonly abbreviating to Bish, because Bi is a step too far and a misnomer!

I have been in the recruitment industry for a little over 22 years and am still a little bit in love with it.  In a ‘throw a glass of wine in it’s face one minute, and buy it flowers and chocolates the next’ kind of way.

I’m a bit blunt and a bit foul-mouthed (although I’ve kept the site relatively clean) which generally prompts people to opt for “you know where you stand with Sarah”, when pushed to find a compliment.

I previously worked for a large-ish (£100M+ turnover) independent generalist agency for 13 years and crawled my way from a not-so-humble trainee to Head of Corporate Sales & Public Sector before leaving to set up on my own in 2009.  Yeah!  At the height of the recession.

Having seen how different it is to run your own business, often on a shoestring, I decided to start this blog mainly for independent recruiters that have micro (you in your bedroom) or SME (you and a friend in your kitchen or 250 employees) businesses.  I realised quickly that the lack of support functions like marketing, IT, accounts & finance etc, means that you have to be so much more resourceful.  Especially when you’re up against corporate beasts with seemingly limitless advertising budgets and resources to draw upon.  I also realised that the big firms have often lost a lot of natural resource because things are so much easier, and process-driven, for them.  Then I realised that there will also be individual recruiters within larger organisations that want to develop themselves.

So, my aim is to be of use to:  independent recruiters and recruitment business owners; people thinking of starting their own recruitment business or in the start-up phase; trainee Consultants just starting out in their career; or Consultants in corporate or boutique businesses who just want to be brilliant at what they do and raise industry standards along the way.

Our careers impact our lives in so many ways and we have a great responsibility when advising and helping people with theirs.  I believe that we can make healthy profit and grow sustainable and successful businesses by genuinely helping people, rather than it being a happy by-product of making money.

I’m still figuring out how to use WordPress and I haven’t built a multi-million turnover business (yet) but I have made lots of mistakes and have had many successes.  I am happy to share them with you, invite other experts to help you too, and hope that you might want to engage and share your thoughts along the way.

If you want to make contact, ask for help in some specific area, or just give me a piece of your mind, please write to me at hello@resourcefulrecruiter.co.uk.  I can’t promise to get back to you particularly promptly (I’m trying to run a business here), but I do promise to get back to you.

Thank you for your time.  I hope you get something from this space.

Sarah
